“Illuminating how unexpected nutrients sustain malignancy through in vivo metabolic tracing”
Dr Andrés Méndez Lucas
University of Barcelona / The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL)
The host of this seminar is Lucas Pontel.
Andrés Méndez Lucas trained in Veterinary Medicine and Biochemistry in Barcelona and completed his Ph.D. on the metabolic regulation of cancer at the University of Barcelona. He later pursued postdoctoral research at the Francis Crick Institute in London, where he used genetic models and in vivo stable isotope–based metabolomics to investigate how tumours acquire and reprogramme nutrient use. Since 2021, Méndez Lucas has been a Principal Investigator and Lecturer at the University of Barcelona and IDIBELL. His laboratory aims to redefine how we understand tumour metabolism in vivo, focusing on the discovery of unexpected nutrient sources, adaptive metabolic states that enable malignant resilience, and metabolic dependencies that could be leveraged therapeutically. By integrating in vivo stable-isotope tracing with mechanistic studies, his research seeks to reveal hidden layers of metabolic plasticity and uncover clinically actionable vulnerabilities in cancer.
