The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, visits the Josep Carreras Institute and praises its research against cancer

The President Pedro Sánchez has visited the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute this Thursday, May 4, where he has been able to learn more about the research carried out to advance the fight against diseases such as leukemia and cancer. The head of the Spanish Chief Executive was accompanied by Josep Carreras, President of the Institute’s Board of Trustees and the Josep Carreras Foundation, and Miquel Iceta, Minister of Culture and Sports.

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has visited the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute, a CERCA center of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the first European research center focused on leukemia. Pedro Sánchez was welcomed by Josep Carreras, President of the Institute’s Board of Trustees and President of the Josep Carreras Foundation. He was also accompanied by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, the Government Delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, the president of the Institute's Management Committee, Dr. Evarist Feliu and the acting Managing Director of the Institute, Ana Garrido. The Mayor of Badalona, Rubén Guijarro, as well as Albert Carreras i Coll and Albert Carreras Pérez, representing the Carreras family, also attended the visit.

The head of the Spanish Chief Executive has had the opportunity to visit the Institute’s facilities, such as the microscopy area, the cell culture rooms and the Single Cell unit, among others. Pedro Sánchez has shown great interest in the research being carried out at the center and was able to talk to several researchers.

President Sánchez has highlighted the leading role of the Josep Carreras Institue in the fight against leukemia. He has stressed the Spanish Government’s firm support to the Institute and highlighted the coordinated work of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Ministry of Health to advance in the study and treatment of the different types of leukemia and other hematological malignancies. Likewise, Sánchez has underlined the commitment of the Chief Executive with science, through the reinforcement of investments in R+D+i and talent attraction and retention, in order to strengthen the fight against diseases such as leukemia and cancer.
