The State Research Agency, part of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, has published the final resolution of the 2023 call for the "Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence" and "María de Maeztu Units of Excellence" accreditations and public grants. After a rigorous and demanding competitive process, ten centres, including the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), and six units have been selected.

This distinction recognises the most outstanding research centres for their international scientific leadership and their ability to contribute to the advancement of research and generate high-impact results. Receiving this accreditation demonstrates the world-class research conducted at the Josep Carreras Institute. Additionally, it aims to strengthen institutional capabilities and enhance global scientific leadership by supporting the implementation of the strategic plans proposed by accredited centres.

The accreditation and grant as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence will decisively contribute to increasing the international visibility of the Josep Carreras Institute, as well as the scientific, social, and economic impact of its research results, facilitating talent attraction and consolidating its scientific leadership.

As an accredited Severo Ochoa centre, the Josep Carreras Institute has joined the SOMMa Alliance, which brings together research institutions of excellence from different scientific disciplines. This alliance seeks to maximise and promote the international scientific and social impact of its members and create a platform for exchange and discussion.

The Severo Ochoa accreditation is a key incentive to continue working, as an unstoppable team, for research excellence in leukaemia, other haematological malignancies and cancer in general.
