The European Academy of Sciences is home to scientific excellence and cutting-edge fundamental and interdisciplinary science in Europe, which is at the heart of any scientific and technological innovation. It is an independent, non-profit non-governmental organization, made up of leading academics and engineers who conduct innovative research and develop advanced technologies, united by the commitment to promote science and technology and fostering the essential role of Science for social and economic development.

Likewise, the Academy also contributes to the development of international policies in science and technology and facilitates the creation of a critical mass needed to address the most important scientific problems. In this sense, the Academy has an important role to play in promoting peace and prosperity, while fostering broad international scientific and technological collaboration without making distinctions of ethnicity, gender, language or religion.

The European Academy of Sciences has elected Dr. Manel Esteller for his important contributions to the Biomedical Sciences, particularly for his discoveries in cancer epigenetics, that has brought a new light to this disease and opened the door to the application of new diagnostic tests and the development of new cancer treatments.

The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute is a public facility belonging to the Generalitat de Catalunya’s CERCA network. It was born in 2010 aimed at fostering biomedical research and personalized medicine in the field of leukaemia and other malignant blood diseases. It is the first European center exclusively focused in leukaemia and malignant hemopathies, and one of the few existing in the world. The Josep Carreras Institute has three independent but coordinated campus: Campus Clínic-UB, Campus ICO-Germans Trias i Pujol-UAB and Campus Sant Pau-UAB.
