Fumiichiro Yamamoto

Biography


Dr. Yamamoto received a Ph.D. in Developmental/Cellular Biology from the Osaka City University, Osaka, Japan. After postdoctoral work at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (Stony Brook University) in NY, USA, he became the Head of the Molecular Biology Laboratory at The Biomembrane Institute in Seattle, WA. He held a joint appointment as Research Assistant Professor, and later as Research Associate Professor at the Department of Pathobiology, School of Public Health at the University of Washington. In 1995 he joined the faculty as Associate Professor at the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation (Sanford-Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute), in La Jolla, CA. After holding the Chaire d’Excellence, Pierre de Fermat, University of Toulouse III (Paul Sabatier University), Toulouse, France, he was recruited as a Senior Group Leader to the Institut de Medicina PredictivaI Personalitzada del Càncer (IMPPC) in Badalona, Spain in 2009. In 2015 Dr. Yamamoto’s research group was incorporated into the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute. Dr. Yamamoto has received international recognition for his elucidation of the molecular genetic basis of the histo-blood group ABO system. He also holds the Diplome de Docteur Honoris Causa de Universite de Toulouse, France.
