“Dissecting dynamics of chromatin organization in cell differentiation and cancer"
Dr Luciano Di Croce
Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG)
The host of this seminar is Àlex Vaquero.
Luciano Di Croce, ICREA Research Professor, is an internationally recognized leader in epigenetics and chromatin biology. He currently coordinates the “Genome Biology” Programme at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona, Spain. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” before pursuing postdoctoral research in Marburg with Miguel Beato, where he studied the interplay between transcription and chromatin structure, and later in Milan with Pier Giuseppe Pelicci, where he uncovered the link between oncogenic fusion proteins and DNA methylation. In 2003, he established his laboratory at CRG, which quickly gained international recognition for pioneering studies on chromatin regulation in stem cells and cancer.
His research investigates how epigenetic modifications and chromatin architecture regulate gene expression, cell fate, and tumorigenesis, with particular emphasis on Polycomb complexes and their role in leukemia and pediatric brain tumors. He has led major European initiatives, including the FP7 4DCellFate consortium and the Horizon 2020 ChromDesign network. Elected EMBO Member in 2013, he has been honored with distinctions such as the Lincei Prize and the Silver Medal of the Italian Republic.
