Biography

Dr Lurdes Zamora is Head of the Molecular Genetics Unit, Hematology Laboratory, ICO-Germans Trias I Pujol Hospital.  She and Dr Blanca Xicoy are joint group leaders of the Genetics and Epigenetics of Myeloid Neoplasms Group, which collaborates closely with projects at the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC). Dr Zamora received her Biology degree from Barcelona University in 2000. After two years of studies she finished her Master's in Biology at Hospital del Mar, Barcelona. She worked as a Predoctoral Research Fellow at the Leukemia and Lymphoma's Laboratory from Dr Albitar in the M.D. Anderson (Houston, Texas, USA) in 2003.    She completed her PhD at Hospital del Mar (Barcelona) in 2005 with a Doctoral Thesis entitled "Biological Characterization of Essential Thrombocythemia and Polycythemia Vera" for which she received "Premi extraordinari de Doctorat del curs acadèmic 2004/2005", Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona. She has been the Head of the Molecular Biology Unit in the Department of Hematology-Laboratory at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) in the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital since 2005 and has worked with the Josep Carreras Institute since its creation in 2010 and participated in the process of setting up the laboratories at Germans Trias i Pujol campus. She is also a member of several national and international groups (SEHH, GBMH, CETLAM, GESMD, GELMC, GEMFIN amongst others). Her research is focused on molecular biology in myeloid neoplasms, especially in myelodysplastic syndromes, myelomonocytic leukemia and myeloproliferative neoplasms. Her research interests are aimed at finding biological markers that could help in the diagnosis, prognosis and the study of the influence of viruses on genetics as well finding the best treatment for each patient.
