Beyond tumor B-cell depletion: can we achieve an immune reset in follicular lymphoma?

Dr Karin Tarte

Rennes Medical School & Rennes University Hospital. France.

The host of this seminar is Ari Melnick.

Karin Tarte is a Professor in Immunology with expertise in Hemato-oncology, particularly B-cell malignancies. Her research initially focused on multiple myeloma, contributing to the development of immunotherapeutic approaches and BAFF/APRIL targeting, before moving to B-cell lymphomas. Throughout her carrier, she has investigated the complex and dynamic interplay between malignant B cells and their supportive niches. Since 2008, she has led a research unit bringing together clinicians and scientists to advance basic and translational research on normal and malignant B-cell differentiation within their microenvironment. Her current research explores the temporal, spatial, and functional heterogeneity of B-cell lymphoma niches and contributes to the development of innovative therapies. Her work has helped establish the permissive tumor microenvironment as a pivotal driver of lymphoma pathogenesis and a promising therapeutic target. Alongside her research activity, she heads the Immunology Department of Rennes University Hospital and established the SITI, an ISO9001-certified immunomonitoring lab devoted to the evaluation of novel biotherapy approaches. As an active member of the French Lymphoma Study Association (LYSA), she contributes to the design and biological monitoring of large multicenter phase III clinical trials in lymphomas, looking for microenvironment-related stratification criteria, biomarkers of response, and mechanisms of action of new therapeutic options. She has also led several academic phase I/II clinical trials of cell-based therapies, particularly mesenchymal stromal cells, opening new avenue to manipulate immune response and helping in the definition of European and international clinical and regulatory guidelines for their use.
