As an undergraduate student, Ruth M Risueño worked in Dr. Isabel Guerrero’s laboratory (Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa, CSIC-UAM), a group focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Hh signaling during Drosophila development. After finishing her BSc in Biology (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2002), she started her PhD in Dr. Balbino Alarcón’s laboratory (Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa, CSIC-UAM). Her work as a graduate student focused on describing early events in T-cell activation. In 2007, Ruth joined Dr. Mickie Bhatia’s group (McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute, Canada), where she worked on human hematopoiesis and leukemogenesis in vivo. The projects she was involved in focused on xenotransplantation mouse models for human AML, screening anti-leukemia compounds and their pre-clinical validation, hematopoietic differentiation from human pluripotent stem cells and direct differentiation of adult mature cells to different lineages.
In 2012, Ruth joined the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute as a Junior Group Leader. Her group is interested in leukemic stem cells and exploding new therapeutic approaches for leukemia. In 2015, together with IJC, Dr. Risueño co-founded Leukos Biotech with the aim to clinically develop new drugs for leukemia.
