Professor Ciril Rozman
Professor Rozman was Director of the Farreras Valentí School of Hematology (1969-1999), Head of the Subdivision of Medicine of the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona. He was Professor of Medical Pathology at the University of Salamanca (1965-1969) and Professor of Pathology and Clinical Medicine of the University of Barcelona (1969-1999). He is currently professor emeritus of the University of Barcelona.
Professor Rozman was vice-president of the Josep Carreras Foundation for 24 years.
Prof. Rozman is recognized as one of the most important experts in the world on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). His work on hematological therapies has centered on bone marrow transplants and he performed the first allogeneic transplant operation in Spain. He has also carried out research into prognostic factors and morphological and biological studies of malignant diseases of the blood.
He was responsible for setting up the first umbilical cord stem cell bank in Spain.
Professor Evarist Feliu
Professor Feliu worked under the direction of Prof. Rozman and Prof. Joan Lluís Vives Corrons for 20 years. From 1975-1976 and 1981-1982 he carried out research in the University of Paris (Hospital Beaujon) and Harvard University (Massachusetts General Hospital) respectively. He was Head of the Hematology Service at the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (HUGTiP) in Badalona, Barcelona from 1991 to 1995. He was Medical Director from 1995-1997 and Managing Director of the same hospital from 1997-2002.
He held the post of Director of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) from 2003 to 2009 where he was also Scientific Director; he is currently Director of the Program for University Interactions and Head of the Hematology Laboratory Service. He was professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) from 1985 to 1997 and 1997 to 2007 respectively and since 2008 he has been Professor of Medical Hematology at the UAB.
He is a trustee, Vicepresident and the Scientific Director of the Josep Carreras Foundation and President of the Management Commission at the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute.
Prof. Feliu is known for his prestigious research work in the fields of integrated procedures and methods for hematological diagnosis, especially electron microscopy of blood cells and bone marrow and he has made relevant contributions both nationally and internationally with his publication of studies of pathologies of the spleen. During his career he has also set up important research groups to study lymphomas in HIV-positive patients the cytogenetics and molecular biology of malignant blood diseases.
