The work on the foundations of the new building for the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute building at its Campus ICO-GTiP started on time in May. The new building will be on the Can Ruti Biomedical Campus in Badalona near Barcelona. It will be connected with the Institute of Predictive and Personalized Medicine of cancer (IMPPC) and the new Centre for Comparative Medicine of the Germans Trias i Pujol Health Sciences Institute (IGTP), which will start construction this summer.

Excavation work has progressed rapidly and according to plan as part of the Phase Zero part of the works to build the foundations and the shell of the building. This will be followed by Phase I to add the services and fittings and Phase II will include furnishing and equipment.

The building will occupy 8,200 m2 on three floors and an underground car park for 92 cars. In the initial stage part of the laboratories will be fitted leaving the rest available for when the institute expands in the future.

The building will house the laboratories for the Campus ICO-GTiP, which will work in close collaboration with the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital.   The institute also has laboratories at its Campus Clinic-UB on the Clinic Hospital Campus in Barcelona and is planning more in the Sant Pau Hospital Campus in the new research building there.

The new laboratories on the ICO-GTiP Campus are expected to be fully operational in 2016.
