Dr. José Tomás Navarro Ferrando
He is an attending physician in the Department of Hematology-Laboratory at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO)- Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital and is responsible for the cytomorphological diagnosis of lymphomas. His research group works on several projects of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) and Dr Maria Joao Baptista is a postdoctoral investigator in his research group funding by the IJC.
Dr. Navarro received his M.D. from the University of Valencia Medical School. After one year of residency in Internal Medicine at University Hospital in Elche, he trained as a resident in Hematology-Hemotherapy at Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital from 1992 to 1995. He completed his Ph.D. at the Autononomous University of Barcelona with a Doctoral Thesis on the influence of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in the treatment of lymphomas of HIV-infected patients. He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, from 2007 to 2009, and completed a stay as a visiting physician in the Lymphoma Program of the Department of Oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, in 2009.
He focusses on the study of clinical aspects and biological mechanisms of lymphomas, especially in HIV-infected patients. His research interests are the study of the influence of viruses on the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of lymphomagenesis and the implications of Glycobiology in the dissemination of lymphomas.
